The Circuito de Cartagena is a permanent racetrack which is located near the city of Cartagena, in South Eastern Spain.  Opened in the early 1990′s, the track has retained the same layout since then.  However, it has recently undergone refurbishment. Because of its location in a warm area of Spain it receives a lot of sun each year, which almost guarantees a dry track.

Lots of run-off areas make Cartagena one of the safer European tracks and it is very popular with motorcycle track day enthusiasts. The track itself is set in what looks like a disused quarry.  Although not hosting top level racing, the circuit is a regular pre-season testing ground, particularly with the likes of BSB teams.  It is very twisty with a good mixture of tricky slow or medium speed corners, several fast long sweeping corners and a 610 metre-long straight. Along with the impressive elevation changes this makes for a physically demanding circuit that requires concentration to maintain momentum.  The surface is reckoned to be one of the grippiest anywhere.

Paddock facilities are excellent, with thirty pit boxes, full floodlighting throughout the track, a restaurant and even an on-site hospital.

About Cartagena City

Cartagena is a Spanish city and a major naval station located in the Region of Murcia on the Mediterranean coast on South-Eastern Spain.  As of January 2011, it has a population of 218,210 inhabitants being the Region’s second largest municipality and the country’s 6th non-Province capital city.  The metropolitan area of Cartagena, known as Campo de Cartagena, has a population of 409,586 inhabitants.

Cartagena has been inhabited for over two millennia, being founded around 227 BC by the Carthaginian Hasdrubal the Fair as Qart Hadasht.  The city lived its heyday during the Roman Empire, when it was known as Carthago Nova (the New Carthage) and Carthago Spartaria, capital of the province of Carthaginensis.

Much of the historical weight of Cartagena in the past goes to its coveted defensive port, one of the most important in the western Mediterranean.  Cartagena has been the capital of the Spanish Navy’s Maritime Department of the Mediterranean since the arrival of the Spanish Bourbons in the 18th century.

As far back as the 16th century it was one of the most important naval ports in Spain, together with Ferrol in the North.  It is still an important naval seaport, the main military port of Spain and it is home to a large naval shipyard.  Cartagena is now established as a major cruise ship destination in the Mediterranean and has an emerging cultural focus.
